Co-design of a patient and family-initiated escalation of care intervention to detect and refer patient deterioration in the acute adult hospital setting
Clinical deterioration that is not recognised early enough in hospital remains problematic. It is increasingly recognised that family members may identify changes in a patient’s clinical signs or symptoms prior to healthcare staff. Addressing these concerns is important to improve patient safety. Involving patients and families in recognising and referring their concerns to healthcare staff may improve clinical outcomes.

What is your ideal Research outcome?
To co-design a patient and family-initiated escalation of care intervention to detect and refer patient deterioration in acute adult hospital settings that is suitable for patients’, relatives’ and healthcare professionals’ in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Why did you choose this PhD and why at Queen’s?
Aidín is a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery who is currently undertaking a PhD funded by the HSE Programme for Health Service Improvement (2018-2021). Her key areas of interest include care of the acutely ill, patient safety and integrating student knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology and associated nursing assessment and care of the acutely ill adult patient.
